Putting It All Together
Over the last few years I’ve developed a few passion projects, first and foremost to continue to explore new ideas and creative avenues, but there’s also building new skills and learning new tools, and of course having the opportunity to enjoy the process of making something and having fun with it. This recent side project, which I thought of as either type vids or lettering shorts, combined a lot of things I love: hand drawn lettering and typography, short films and movie titles, and even though you can’t hear them at the moment, soundtracks. And just to gamify it a bit, the process went something like this: pick a word, select a typographic style, produce the lettering, select footage to match the lettering, layer in the music, and then edit the whole thing togther. Voila. You might also notice a few other finishing touches in some of them: a little camera tracking, a freeze frame, some motion masking. All of these parts of the overall process are really what makes these kinds of projects enjoyable for me: getting to dial-in all of the separate creative elements down to the last detail, in order to produce something that feels completely unique.
